Spirit Dogs

What is a spirit dog?
You are walking alone on an unusually dark and still night. Patches of fog are starting to roll in, seemingly from out of nowhere. The fog has a strange appearence to it on this night, and the moon above makes the fog and surrounding landscape glow eerily. Your footsteps are oddly muffled as you trudge along to where you're going. Suddenly, you feel a sharp chill in the air and hear the soft padding of more footsteps joining your own. You stop and turn towards the source of this new noise, but you can discern nothing through the ever increasing fog. Hmm, strange. You could have sworn you heard something. You pick up the pace, eager to reach your destination. But before you can get very far, you hear the sound of footsteps behind you again, this time they sound a bit closer. Decidedly unsettled, you quickly stop and turn to look again, trying to catch whoever is making the noise in the act. There's nothing there. You scoff at your own uneasiness, there's nothing out here, just you. You again start walking, but before you can take more than a few paces, you notice movement out of the corner of your eye. Turning your head to get a better look, you're startled to see a mass of thick swirling mist or smoke like substance moving toward you. Unable to move, you can only stand and stare as the mist swirls around and begins to take on a shape. You watch in horror as the large, imposing form of a wolf or doglike creature materializes. The creature just stands and stares right back at you. It doesn't take you long to realize that this beast is no normal animal. It's much too large to be a normal wolf or dog, and it's manner of materializing out of thin air can only mean that this thing is not of this world. Your heart is pounding in your chest, your blood feels like it's frozen in your veins, and you break out in a cold sweat. This must be the end for you. The beast could easily rip you to shreds. You squeeze your eyes shut, waiting for the inevitable attack, but it doesn't come. After what feels like hours, but in reality is only several seconds, you regain enough courage to slowly open your eyes a bit and peer out at the monster. Still it stands, unmoving and continuing to stare at you. Suddenly, the creature cocks it's head to the side, as if intently studying you. Then, much to your surprise and disbelief, the beast inclines it's head toward you, and looking you square in the eye, smiles. Before you can begin to wonder how such an animal is even able to smile in the first place, the beast quickly disolves back into mist and disappears before your eyes. You stand staring in shock at the spot where the large wolf creature had been standing only moments before, trying to recapture your breath. Eventually, you find that you're able to move again and start to walk away. Shaken, you continue on to your destination, trying to make some sense out of what you just experienced. What? How? Where? Why? You don't know. All you know right now is that you will never forget this night, and what you saw during your lonely walk through the dark.

So what did you see? It was a spirit dog. Spirit dogs are ancient ethereal beings, they have been around for ages. They are guardians of the living, and guides for the dead. Spirit dogs have come to be called by many different names, and have a variety of different appearences.
